Workshop 4 Part 1: Understanding Resiliency in other Contexts
First, we will have a brief discussion on resiliency against systems, such as structural and institutional systems, and How COVID-19 and trauma have made many of us more resilient.
Throughout this discussion, the topic of opportunity gaps, many refer to this as ‘achievement gaps’ but Dr. Hamilton-Hinch will say opportunity gaps as not everyone is afforded the same opportunities. Some of the statistics presented above are from a national and provincial scope.
Currently, curriculum is not designed in a way that reflects the diversity of the Nova Scotian population that follows it. People of diversity, such a 2SLGBTQQIA+ or BIPOC are not often present in the textbooks used as resources to learn. Our school system in Nova Scotia, education and equities are unchanged or 30 years after the end of segregation. “We have talked about the social and structural determinants of health, education is one of those social determinants of health. So without a proper education, it becomes difficult to go on to post secondary, which becomes difficult to become gainfully employed.”
