It is important to note that sometimes we need to treat people differently to be able to treat them equally. It is important for us to question, how can one’s identity have an impact on one's well being? To be able to understand this, we must be able to understand some aspects of an individual's identity. When we think about diversity, we often think about things like gender, ethnicity, culture, geography, language, religion, socio economic status, or education. When providing health care, it is important to go a step further, to understand barriers this person may be facing. Asking questions like, what experiences have they had today, experiences in the past, experiences receiving healthcare, and experiences when at a pharmacy. Remember you are one of the most trusted health care professionals.

Extra Material: Take the Implicit Bias Test:

The Implicit Association Test (IAT) measures the strength of associations between concepts and evaluations or stereotypes to reveal an individual’s hidden or subconscious biases. This test was first published in 1998 by Project Implicit, and has since been continuously updated and enhanced. Project Implicit was founded by Tony Greenwald of the University of Washington, Mahzarin Banaji of Harvard University, and Brian Nosek of the University of Virginia. Project Implicit is a non-profit organization aimed at educating the public about hidden biases and providing a “virtual laboratory” for collecting data on the Internet.
